When and Where?
Weekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week), between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory.
Children who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Regular Attendance
While we do welcome members of the public, we do ask you to consider that, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times, or a Monthly meeting more than twice, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits).
Outdoors
If the weather is suitable, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars, the Moon, Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for, however, assuming clear skies, there is always something interesting to have a look at, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky!
Indoors
Inside the building, in good weather and bad, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. We don’t tend to have arranged presentations at these public meetings however there is planetarium software, astronomical images (many of them taken by our members), etc.
So good weather or bad, feel free to pop along!Whether you’re a complete beginner or a professional astronomer, or just interested, we welcome you.Perhaps you’ve recently bought a telescope but don’t know how to set it up or get the best from it – bring it along with you (if it’s portable enough!) and somebody will be happy to help you. If it’s too big to bring along, write down the manufacturer and model number, and maybe a couple of photos if possible, and if it’s a telescope we’re familiar with we may still be able to advise.
