SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Graham Beamson\, FRSC - "Backyard Spectroscopy"
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \n \nThe March 2025 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2024-2025 session will be held on Friday\, March 21st from 19:00 to 21:00. \n \nAbout This Meeting\n \nOur guest speaker for March 2025 is Dr. Graham Beamson\, FRSC. \n \nGraham did his first degree in chemistry at the University of Oxford and stayed on to do a DPhil in ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. He then worked at the University of Durham in infrared and Raman and in x-ray absorption spectroscopy\, and at ICI and Daresbury Laboratory in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. He has over 100 publications to his name\, and is now retired and lives in Cheshire. As a retirement project he did an Open University degree in geology and astronomy. He has a rolling roof observatory with several telescopes and spectrographs. \n \nThe title of Graham’s talk will be: \n \n\nBackyard Spectroscopy \n \n\n \n“It is over 200 years since Fraunhofer developed his spectroscope\, and since then spectroscopy has grown to be of fundamental importance in astronomy. This talk will describe some of my own activities in amateur astronomical spectroscopy\, in particular using a Sol’Ex – Star’Ex spectrograph. In Sol’Ex configuration this functions as a spectroheliograph\, recording images of the Sun at a defined wavelength. In Star’Ex mode it functions as a high resolution spectrograph for night-time observations. Examples will be shown of solar images and spectra of stars.” \n \n\n \nQ-Park Car Parking Discount\n \nFor those of you travelling into the city centre by car\, don’t forget that you can get 20% off parking at Q-Park Hanover Street by using the promo-code QUAKERSLV when pre-booking through the website Q-Park

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Dimitris Stamatellos - "New Worlds in our Galaxy"
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \nThe April 2024 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2023-2024 session will be held on Friday\, April 19th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Dimitris Stamatellos\, PhD\, Reader in Astrophysics (Associate Professor) of the University of Central Lancashire where he leads the Theoretical star formation and Exoplanets Group. His website can be found at https://dstamatellos.wordpress.com/ \nThe title of the lecture (previously listed as “Exoplanets”) is: \n\nNew Worlds in our Galaxy \n\nThe question about the origin of planets and life has fascinated humankind since ancient times. Thousands of exoplanets\, i.e. planets around other stars\, have been discovered . To our surprise these exoplanets have properties that are very different from those of the planets of our Solar System\, thus challenging our understanding of how planets form. Recent observations suggest that planets and planetary systems may form much faster than it has been previously thought. I will discuss the methods for discovering exoplanets and present models of planet formation in protostellar discs around young stars. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Information & Safety Procedures\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible. \nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available. \nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them. \nWe will continue to ventilate the room. \nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \n\n\n\n\nLivestream & Recording Information\nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, and may be live-streamed via YouTube\, if I get the equipment set up in time 😊 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA recording may be available. \n\n\n\n\nSubscription Info \nIf you have not yet become a Member of the Society and wish to join\, please see our Membership of the Liverpool Astronomical Society page before sending any payment. \n\nNote: Membership Fees are correct as of October 2025 \n\n\n\n\nMembership Type\nPrice\n\n\n\n\nAdults (18 & above) Annual Subscription\n£25.00\n\n\nJuniors (14-17 inclusive) Annual Subscription\n£5.00\n\n\n\n\nPlease note:Subscriptions are due from 1st October each year and must be paid by January 31st or your membership may be suspended. If not paid by 31st March your membership will cease. \nPaying your Subscription Electronically (e.g. via e-banking)\nYou can now pay for your subscription via Internet banking. \n\n\n\n\nName:\nLiverpool Astronomical Society\n\n\nSort Code:\n60-19-24\n\n\nAccount No.:\n28521250\n\n\nPayment Ref.:\nUse your full name (or as much of it as possible\, remove spaces if needed) as the reference\, so that our Treasurer can connect your payment to the correct account in the books.\n\n\n\n\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you require more information. \n \n \nMore information about membership can be found here. \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost. \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 18:30 and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Professor Andy Newsam - "A Universe for All"
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \nThe March 2024 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2023-2024 session will be held on Friday\, March 22nd from 19:00 to 21:00. \nPlease note: This is the FOURTH Friday of the month\, not the third. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Professor Andy Newsam\, Professor of Astronomy Education and Engagement at Astrophysics Research Institute\, Liverpool John Moores University\, and Director of the National Schools’ Observatory. \nThe title of the lecture is: \n\nA Universe for All \n\nAstronomy creates a sense of excitement and wonder. Liverpool John Moores University’s Schools’ Observatory (www.schoolsobservatory.org) taps into that interest to explore science\, mathematics\, engineering and technology. The Observatory was originally set up to provide a way for UK and Irish school students to take their own observations with the world’s largest fully-robotic telescope – the Liverpool Telescope in the Canary Islands – and for more than a decade it has been doing exactly that with many thousands of observations taken for students of all ages. However\, it has also grown to have a much wider mission to help prepare future generations for the exciting but challenging technological world that lies ahead of them.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Gary Palmer - High Resolution Solar Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \nThe February 2024 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2023-2024 session will be held on Friday\, February 16th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Gary Palmer FRAS\, well-respected astro-photographer (with a preference for solar work)\, BAA member and tutor. \nFrom Gary’s ‘About Me’ page: \n\nI started off with the basics of a DSLR and some free software as a hobby\, now I work at the top end of manufacturing equipment. I started off like most new comers to the wonders of the astronomy world. I now have the ability to capture a wide range of images and videos of most of the things we see in the sky: day and night on a day to day basis\, in high resolution and not just solar\, but deep sky and lunar. Through experience and self-taught knowledge\, I have come to have a soft-spot for Solar imaging predominantly. But I enjoy all types of imaging and processing\, and challenging the intended uses of equipment that I use to produce some of the best images around. \nOver the years I have built up an in-depth knowledge\, and good working relationships with many top manufacturers who now send in-the-making and new to the market astronomical kits from the basics to most advanced equipment for me to test for them. Once tested I am then able to provide advice and guidance as well as providing images I have produced with the equipment for publishing. I have reviewed equipment for magazines and TV programmes and have also been invited and taken part in many radio discussions worldwide on varying astronomical subjects. \nI am currently a ‘Fellow’ of the Royal Astronomical Society\, and I am also a member of The British Astronomical Association which I am proud to be a part of. \nMy dedication to imaging has at times been difficult as many will know that the weather and seeing conditions within the UK can be quite variable and therefore be testing when trying to capture images whether it be day or night. However\, much of the equipment I use is either proto-type or for testing. I enjoy a challenge when working with all types of equipment by varying manufacturers. I have adopted a no-nonsense approach to this work which has enabled me to capture some pretty good images in a small amount of time. This has led to a great following on social media networks and I have had many images published across a variety of media including magazines and internet and have been shortlisted and won many competitions. \nI currently offer many workshops across the UK and abroad to provide information on equipment\, image capture\, and processing. I also run “Solar Outreach” programmes at events to bring some of these products from manufacturers out for the public to use and see on a regular basis. \nMy workshops range from talking through the basics of simple DSLR imaging to the top end telescopes and cameras. I can also provide knowledge on free software packages to the advanced subscription services on the market and how to use them. With my experience I am also able to provide advice and guidance on the suitability of astro kit\, providing recommendations based on a learner’s needs and desire to image as well as accommodating any budgetary requirements. From a complete novice to the most experienced pro I can help you improve your skills by following a simplified structure. I am also able to offer 1-1 tuition catering for all your needs in the comfort of your own home or garden\, again from the complete novice to a prolific imager or someone returning to imaging. \nThe latest images will be on my Facebook page here. \nGary Palmer – https://www.solarsystemimaging.co.uk/about-me \nThe title of the lecture is: \n\nHigh Resolution Solar Imaging \n\nDescription to follow \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Information & Safety Procedures\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible.
