SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Professor Andy Newsam - "A Universe for All"
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \n\n\n\nThe March 2024 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2023-2024 session will be held on Friday\, March 22nd from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This is the FOURTH Friday of the month\, not the third. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur guest speaker this month is Professor Andy Newsam\, Professor of Astronomy Education and Engagement at Astrophysics Research Institute\, Liverpool John Moores University\, and Director of the National Schools’ Observatory. \n\n\n\nThe title of the lecture is: \n\n\n\n\nA Universe for All \n\n\n\n\nAstronomy creates a sense of excitement and wonder. Liverpool John Moores University’s Schools’ Observatory (www.schoolsobservatory.org) taps into that interest to explore science\, mathematics\, engineering and technology. The Observatory was originally set up to provide a way for UK and Irish school students to take their own observations with the world’s largest fully-robotic telescope – the Liverpool Telescope in the Canary Islands – and for more than a decade it has been doing exactly that with many thousands of observations taken for students of all ages. However\, it has also grown to have a much wider mission to help prepare future generations for the exciting but challenging technological world that lies ahead of them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Information & Safety Procedures\n\n\n\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible. \n\n\n\nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available. \n\n\n\nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them. \n\n\n\nWe will continue to ventilate the room. \n\n\n\nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\nLivestream & Recording Information\n\n\n\nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, and may be live-streamed via YouTube\, if I get the equipment set up in time 😊 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA recording may be available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubscription Info \n\n\n\nIf you have not yet become a Member of the Society and wish to join\, please see our Membership of the Liverpool Astronomical Society page before sending any payment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Membership Fees are correct as of October 2025 \n\n\n\nMembership TypePriceAdults (18 & above) Annual Subscription£25.00Juniors (14-17 inclusive) Annual Subscription£5.00\n\n\n\nPlease note:Subscriptions are due from 1st October each year and must be paid by January 31st or your membership may be suspended. If not paid by 31st March your membership will cease. \n\n\n\nPaying your Subscription Electronically (e.g. via e-banking)\n\n\n\nYou can now pay for your subscription via Internet banking. \n\n\n\nName:Liverpool Astronomical SocietySort Code:60-19-24Account No.:28521250Payment Ref.:Use your full name (or as much of it as possible\, remove spaces if needed) as the reference\, so that our Treasurer can connect your payment to the correct account in the books.\n\n\n\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you require more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information about membership can be found here. \n\n\n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \n\n\n\nPlease note – Doors will only open after 18:30 and not before. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \n\n\n\nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Gary Palmer - High Resolution Solar Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \n \nThe February 2024 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2023-2024 session will be held on Friday\, February 16th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n \n\n \nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Gary Palmer FRAS\, well-respected astro-photographer (with a preference for solar work)\, BAA member and tutor. \n \nFrom Gary’s ‘About Me’ page: \n \n\nI started off with the basics of a DSLR and some free software as a hobby\, now I work at the top end of manufacturing equipment. I started off like most new comers to the wonders of the astronomy world. I now have the ability to capture a wide range of images and videos of most of the things we see in the sky: day and night on a day to day basis\, in high resolution and not just solar\, but deep sky and lunar. Through experience and self-taught knowledge\, I have come to have a soft-spot for Solar imaging predominantly. But I enjoy all types of imaging and processing\, and challenging the intended uses of equipment that I use to produce some of the best images around. \n \nOver the years I have built up an in-depth knowledge\, and good working relationships with many top manufacturers who now send in-the-making and new to the market astronomical kits from the basics to most advanced equipment for me to test for them. Once tested I am then able to provide advice and guidance as well as providing images I have produced with the equipment for publishing. I have reviewed equipment for magazines and TV programmes and have also been invited and taken part in many radio discussions worldwide on varying astronomical subjects. \n \nI am currently a ‘Fellow’ of the Royal Astronomical Society\, and I am also a member of The British Astronomical Association which I am proud to be a part of. \n \nMy dedication to imaging has at times been difficult as many will know that the weather and seeing conditions within the UK can be quite variable and therefore be testing when trying to capture images whether it be day or night. However\, much of the equipment I use is either proto-type or for testing. I enjoy a challenge when working with all types of equipment by varying manufacturers. I have adopted a no-nonsense approach to this work which has enabled me to capture some pretty good images in a small amount of time. This has led to a great following on social media networks and I have had many images published across a variety of media including magazines and internet and have been shortlisted and won many competitions. \n \nI currently offer many workshops across the UK and abroad to provide information on equipment\, image capture\, and processing. I also run “Solar Outreach” programmes at events to bring some of these products from manufacturers out for the public to use and see on a regular basis. \n \nMy workshops range from talking through the basics of simple DSLR imaging to the top end telescopes and cameras. I can also provide knowledge on free software packages to the advanced subscription services on the market and how to use them. With my experience I am also able to provide advice and guidance on the suitability of astro kit\, providing recommendations based on a learner’s needs and desire to image as well as accommodating any budgetary requirements. From a complete novice to the most experienced pro I can help you improve your skills by following a simplified structure. I am also able to offer 1-1 tuition catering for all your needs in the comfort of your own home or garden\, again from the complete novice to a prolific imager or someone returning to imaging. \n \nThe latest images will be on my Facebook page here. \nGary Palmer – https://www.solarsystemimaging.co.uk/about-me \n\n \nThe title of the lecture is: \n \n\nHigh Resolution Solar Imaging \n \n\n \nDescription to follow \n \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Information & Safety Procedures\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible. \nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available. \nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them. \nWe will continue to ventilate the room. \nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \n\n\n \n\n\nLivestream & Recording Information\n \nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, and may be live-streamed via YouTube\, if I get the equipment set up in time 😊 \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nA recording may be available. \n\n\n\n\n \nSubscription Info \n \nIf you have not yet become a Member of the Society and wish to join\, please see our Membership of the Liverpool Astronomical Society page before sending any payment. \n\nNote: Membership Fees are correct as of October 2025 \n\n\n\n\nMembership Type\nPrice\n\n\n\n\nAdults (18 & above) Annual Subscription\n£25.00\n\n\nJuniors (14-17 inclusive) Annual Subscription\n£5.00\n\n\n\n\nPlease note:Subscriptions are due from 1st October each year and must be paid by January 31st or your membership may be suspended. If not paid by 31st March your membership will cease. \nPaying your Subscription Electronically (e.g. via e-banking)\nYou can now pay for your subscription via Internet banking. \n\n\n\n\nName:\nLiverpool Astronomical Society\n\n\nSort Code:\n60-19-24\n\n\nAccount No.:\n28521250\n\n\nPayment Ref.:\nUse your full name (or as much of it as possible\, remove spaces if needed) as the reference\, so that our Treasurer can connect your payment to the correct account in the books.\n\n\n\n\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you require more information. \n \n\n \n \nMore information about membership can be found here. \n \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost. \n \n\n \nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \n \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 18:30 and not before. \n \n\n \nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \n \nWith best wishes – Mark

DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker for October 2023 is Mr. Gary Gilbert\, whose talk is entitled: \n\nThe Drake Equation: Is There Anybody Out There? \n\nOne of the biggest questions\, not just for philosophers\, astronomers\, astrophysicists or cosmologists but for humanity as a whole is “Are we alone in the universe?” \nIn 1961\, Dr. Frank Drake decided to look at this question through a mathematical lens and devised what has come to be known as “The Drake Equation” – the result of which gives a possible number for how many civilisations might be capable of communication with us via radio signals. \nJoin us as Gary talks us through this fascinating equation and what it means for life in the universe beyond earth.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Luke Hart - "Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang"
DESCRIPTION:The March 2022 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2022 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, March 18th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Luke Hart\, Software Engineer at TNEI Services Ltd. focusing on power systems analysis\, part of the ESA New Horizons Spectral Distortion Working Group and postdoctoral researcher\, PhD student and MPhys student at the University of Manchester. Luke’s lecture is entitled: \n“Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang”\n\nThere have been lots of amazing astrophysical discoveries in the 20th century including the first pulsars\, the birth of radio astronomy and even the first attempts at using supernovae to explain stellar life cycles. One of the most important however has been the discovery and subsequent understanding of the microwave background radiation (CMB) – the peculiar relic signal that echoes from the Big Bang epoch itself. In this lecture\, I will broach the history of the Big Bang and how it was discovered\, discuss what the fuss is all about: how a tiny ripple in a sea of light can give us the subtlest of clues about our own universe’s understanding. I will try to link in recent research and modern satellites\, theories and other advances in the field of modern cosmology and how they relate to the CMB. To conclude\, I will talk about the most exceptional of advances in theoretical cosmology and how these tiny little flickers in the signal could potentially allow us to look even further back than before. \n\n\n  \nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, but will also be live-streamed via Zoom and YouTube. \nSociety members have been sent a Zoom invite.\nA recording IS publicly available for this lecture »»» at this YouTube link. \nFor those attending at the QMH:\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible.\nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available.\nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them.\nWe will continue to ventilate the room.\nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \n  \n\n \n\nSubscriptions for the current session would normally be due however fees are still being waived for the moment. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Mr. Sam Walton - "Space Weather"
DESCRIPTION:The September 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society will be held on Friday\, September 17th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nNormally this meeting would have been the Presidential Address we haven’t yet been able to have the AGM\, we’ve opted to do this meeting more like a ‘normal’ one\, albeit online.\n\n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Sam Walton\, of the Space Plasma Physics Group\, in the Department of Space & Climate Physics\, in the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Space Weather“\n\nThe Sun is an essential ingredient for life on Earth\, providing light\, energy and warmth\, however it is also a huge danger to us. The Sun continuously ejects millions of tonnes of highly energetic\, electrically charged particles into space\, known as the ’solar wind’. \nWhen the solar wind reaches Earth\, it interacts with our planet’s geomagnetic field in extremely complex ways\, posing a danger to technological infrastructure such as satellites\, power grids and communications. We call this phenomenon ’Space Weather’. \nThis talk will guide you through the origins and journey of the Solar Wind from the Sun to the Earth\, describing some of these complex interactions and why they are so threatening to our existing infrastructure. Finally\, what are scientists doing in order to ultimately understand\, predict and mitigate the effects of space weather? \n\n  \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording IS publicly available for this lecture »»» at this YouTube link. \n  \n\n\n  \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Professor Derek Ward-Thompson - "How to Take a Picture of a Black Hole"
DESCRIPTION:The March 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, March 19th from 19:00 to 21:00. \nI am very pleased to tell you that this Friday we have speaking for us Professor Derek Ward-Thompson of the University of Central Lancashire. \nThis talk\, which was highly requested\, was originally planned for March 2020\, however the pandemic derailed things. \n\nOur guest speaker will be Professor Derek Ward-Thompson\, Head of the School of Physical Sciences and Computing at the University of Central Lancashire\, Director of the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute and President of the UK Society for Popular Astronomy. Professor Ward-Thompson’s lecture is entitled: \n“How to Take a Picture of a Black Hole“\n\nIn April 2019 the first ever picture of the region around a black hole was published\, generating world-wide interest. The technology required to produce this image was extremely challenging\, to say the least. \nIn this talk I will endeavour to explain how this was done\, the technical challenges that had to be overcome and the technological breakthroughs necessary to achieve this. I will then explain what the results mean in terms of the astrophysical implications for this black hole\, which lies at the centre of the galaxy Messier 87. \nI will finish by discussing how the observations might help us to understand the theory of general relativity and test the theory in the limit of ‘extreme gravity’.\n \n\n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording of this lecture is NOT available.\n \n  \n\n \n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Kevin Bowman - "Apollo 13: Lucky for Some?"
DESCRIPTION:The February 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, February 19th from the earlier time of 18:40 to 21:00. \nThis month’s meeting is going to be structured a little differently than normal – it’s not so much a lecture as a cinematic documentary experience. \n\nOur guest speaker will be Dr. Kevin Bowman of the University of Central Lancashire.\nKevin’s presentation is entitled: \n“Apollo 13: Lucky for Some?“\n\nOn April 13th 1970 the Apollo 13 spacecraft was headed for the Moon\, passing 200\,000 miles from the Earth when an “incident” occurred\, crippling the spacecraft. There subsequently followed a chain of events triggering the greatest rescue ever attempted.\nIn 1995 Ron Howard directed the exceptional film Apollo 13\, which in his words “is a dramatization not a documentary of the events”. So what is the real story?\nThis Friday\, Dr. Kevin Bowman explains what really happened. Experience what it was like working in Mission Control as the disaster unfolded\, learn what did or could have happened\, and then you decide whether Apollo 13 really was “lucky for some”.\n \n\nRunning order\n18:40 – 19:00 : Warm up intro slides\n19:00 – 20:00 : Documentary runs\n20:00 – 20:10 : Break\n20:10 – 20:30 (estimated) : Society business\, etc.\n20:30 (estimated) onwards : Q&A\, then meeting officially closes \nBest viewed on a large screen with good speakers (and refreshments!)\nKevin tells me that this presentation is meant to be experienced as if you were at the cinema and is best viewed on as large a screen as possible\, with as much bass as you can give it\, so hook up your subwoofers and get your popcorn ready. \nIf you can connect your computer/laptop to your TV\, please do so 🙂 \nYou can invite friends and family\nIf you have friends outside of the Society who would like to watch too\, you can forward this e-mail to them and they can join in. \nKevin tells me that there are parts during the presentation where the audience is encouraged to ask each other questions\, discuss what’s on-screen\, etc. – please feel free to do this in the Zoom chat box (but not on camera/microphone\, or nobody will be able to hear the presentation 😉) \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent a Zoom link. \nUnfortunately\, due to legal restrictions we are NOT able to record for later viewing OR live stream this presentation to YouTube – only those present at the Zoom meeting will be able to watch. \nA recording is NOT available for this lecture.\n \n  \n\n \n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Informal Talk: Mr. Robert Naeye - "The Possible Signal from Proxima Centauri"
DESCRIPTION:This informal and/or short talk will take place on Friday\, January 29th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nThese informal talks are for LAS members only. These talks will be much less formal than the main meetings; there won’t be any Society Business section at the start\, and they won’t be minuted.\nThe exact format will depend on the individual talk itself.\n\nIn this talk\, Bob Naeye will be joining us from America again. \nBob will be talking about the recent announcement of a possible signal from Proxima Centauri – what some have dubbed ‘the new “Wow!” signal’; what are the chances that it’s real\, and if it is\, what are the ramifications? Should we reply\, and if so who should have the right to speak on behalf of the entire world?\nA bit of a mix of astronomy and philosophy 😊 \nThe format of this talk will see Bob talking for the first part (other webcams/mics will be off during this)\, followed by an open discussion with all participants (with your webcams/mics on if you choose). \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording IS available for this lecture\, to LAS members only\, on request.\nIf you still have the invite e-mail (sent 8th  January 2021 @ 10:06)\, you can also use the YouTube link from that.\n \n  \n\n \nWith best wishes – Mark
