SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Luke Hart - "Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang"
DESCRIPTION:The March 2022 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2022 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, March 18th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Luke Hart\, Software Engineer at TNEI Services Ltd. focusing on power systems analysis\, part of the ESA New Horizons Spectral Distortion Working Group and postdoctoral researcher\, PhD student and MPhys student at the University of Manchester. Luke’s lecture is entitled: \n“Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang”\n\nThere have been lots of amazing astrophysical discoveries in the 20th century including the first pulsars\, the birth of radio astronomy and even the first attempts at using supernovae to explain stellar life cycles. One of the most important however has been the discovery and subsequent understanding of the microwave background radiation (CMB) – the peculiar relic signal that echoes from the Big Bang epoch itself. In this lecture\, I will broach the history of the Big Bang and how it was discovered\, discuss what the fuss is all about: how a tiny ripple in a sea of light can give us the subtlest of clues about our own universe’s understanding. I will try to link in recent research and modern satellites\, theories and other advances in the field of modern cosmology and how they relate to the CMB. To conclude\, I will talk about the most exceptional of advances in theoretical cosmology and how these tiny little flickers in the signal could potentially allow us to look even further back than before. \n\n\n  \nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, but will also be live-streamed via Zoom and YouTube. \nSociety members have been sent a Zoom invite.\nA recording IS publicly available for this lecture »»» at this YouTube link. \nFor those attending at the QMH:\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible.\nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available.\nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them.\nWe will continue to ventilate the room.\nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \n  \n\n \n\nSubscriptions for the current session would normally be due however fees are still being waived for the moment. We will inform you when this changes. \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Mr. Sam Walton - "Space Weather"
DESCRIPTION:The September 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society will be held on Friday\, September 17th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nNormally this meeting would have been the Presidential Address we haven’t yet been able to have the AGM\, we’ve opted to do this meeting more like a ‘normal’ one\, albeit online.\n\n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Sam Walton\, of the Space Plasma Physics Group\, in the Department of Space & Climate Physics\, in the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Space Weather“\n\nThe Sun is an essential ingredient for life on Earth\, providing light\, energy and warmth\, however it is also a huge danger to us. The Sun continuously ejects millions of tonnes of highly energetic\, electrically charged particles into space\, known as the ’solar wind’. \nWhen the solar wind reaches Earth\, it interacts with our planet’s geomagnetic field in extremely complex ways\, posing a danger to technological infrastructure such as satellites\, power grids and communications. We call this phenomenon ’Space Weather’. \nThis talk will guide you through the origins and journey of the Solar Wind from the Sun to the Earth\, describing some of these complex interactions and why they are so threatening to our existing infrastructure. Finally\, what are scientists doing in order to ultimately understand\, predict and mitigate the effects of space weather? \n\n  \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording IS publicly available for this lecture »»» at this YouTube link. \n  \n\n\n  \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Professor Derek Ward-Thompson - "How to Take a Picture of a Black Hole"
DESCRIPTION:The March 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, March 19th from 19:00 to 21:00. \nI am very pleased to tell you that this Friday we have speaking for us Professor Derek Ward-Thompson of the University of Central Lancashire. \nThis talk\, which was highly requested\, was originally planned for March 2020\, however the pandemic derailed things. \n\nOur guest speaker will be Professor Derek Ward-Thompson\, Head of the School of Physical Sciences and Computing at the University of Central Lancashire\, Director of the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute and President of the UK Society for Popular Astronomy. Professor Ward-Thompson’s lecture is entitled: \n“How to Take a Picture of a Black Hole“\n\nIn April 2019 the first ever picture of the region around a black hole was published\, generating world-wide interest. The technology required to produce this image was extremely challenging\, to say the least. \nIn this talk I will endeavour to explain how this was done\, the technical challenges that had to be overcome and the technological breakthroughs necessary to achieve this. I will then explain what the results mean in terms of the astrophysical implications for this black hole\, which lies at the centre of the galaxy Messier 87. \nI will finish by discussing how the observations might help us to understand the theory of general relativity and test the theory in the limit of ‘extreme gravity’.\n \n\n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording of this lecture is NOT available.\n \n  \n\n \n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Kevin Bowman - "Apollo 13: Lucky for Some?"
DESCRIPTION:The February 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, February 19th from the earlier time of 18:40 to 21:00. \nThis month’s meeting is going to be structured a little differently than normal – it’s not so much a lecture as a cinematic documentary experience. \n\nOur guest speaker will be Dr. Kevin Bowman of the University of Central Lancashire.\nKevin’s presentation is entitled: \n“Apollo 13: Lucky for Some?“\n\nOn April 13th 1970 the Apollo 13 spacecraft was headed for the Moon\, passing 200\,000 miles from the Earth when an “incident” occurred\, crippling the spacecraft. There subsequently followed a chain of events triggering the greatest rescue ever attempted.\nIn 1995 Ron Howard directed the exceptional film Apollo 13\, which in his words “is a dramatization not a documentary of the events”. So what is the real story?\nThis Friday\, Dr. Kevin Bowman explains what really happened. Experience what it was like working in Mission Control as the disaster unfolded\, learn what did or could have happened\, and then you decide whether Apollo 13 really was “lucky for some”.\n \n\nRunning order\n18:40 – 19:00 : Warm up intro slides\n19:00 – 20:00 : Documentary runs\n20:00 – 20:10 : Break\n20:10 – 20:30 (estimated) : Society business\, etc.\n20:30 (estimated) onwards : Q&A\, then meeting officially closes \nBest viewed on a large screen with good speakers (and refreshments!)\nKevin tells me that this presentation is meant to be experienced as if you were at the cinema and is best viewed on as large a screen as possible\, with as much bass as you can give it\, so hook up your subwoofers and get your popcorn ready. \nIf you can connect your computer/laptop to your TV\, please do so 🙂 \nYou can invite friends and family\nIf you have friends outside of the Society who would like to watch too\, you can forward this e-mail to them and they can join in. \nKevin tells me that there are parts during the presentation where the audience is encouraged to ask each other questions\, discuss what’s on-screen\, etc. – please feel free to do this in the Zoom chat box (but not on camera/microphone\, or nobody will be able to hear the presentation 😉) \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent a Zoom link. \nUnfortunately\, due to legal restrictions we are NOT able to record for later viewing OR live stream this presentation to YouTube – only those present at the Zoom meeting will be able to watch. \nA recording is NOT available for this lecture.\n \n  \n\n \n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Mr. Steve Tonkin - "Two Eyes Are Better Than One"
DESCRIPTION:The October 2020 (William Lassell Memorial Lecture) monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2020 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, October 23rd (fourth Friday of the month) from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Steve Tonkin FRAS\, author of the popular Binocular Astronomy Book and The Binocular Sky website & newsletter with his talk on practical binocular astronomy\, entitled: \n“Two Eyes Are Better Than One”\n\nIn his talk\, Steve details just what can be achieved with a nice pair of binoculars and why they can be better than a telescope for some applications. \n\n  \nWe are using Microsoft Teams for this meeting\, however you do not need to have the Teams app to take part\, it will work in a browser much like a Zoom meeting would – click the “Watch on the web instead” button.\nIf using a browser\, we’ve found that best results are obtained with Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. \nYou do not need to create a Microsoft account to join the meeting – if you are prompted to log in\, simply click on the “Join anonymously” link just below the Sign in button. \nWe are still configuring the LAS’ own Teams system\, but LAS member Mr. Les Girvan has very kindly offered to take care of the technical side of the meeting and host it with his own Teams account – if you do sign in to the meeting with a Microsoft account\, you may be notified that it is being hosted by “Data-Stream” – this is safe. \nFor the Q&A\, there is a dedicated Q&A feature built-in to Teams so you will be able to ask questions for the speaker in there. \nA recording of the talk will be available to LAS members at a later date. \nThe structure of the meeting is expected to be as follows: \n18:45 – Room opens\n19:00 – Society business\n19:15 – Lecture starts\n20:00 – 2015 – Tea Break\n20:15 – 21:00 – Lecture and Q&A \n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.\nSociety members have been sent a link to MS Teams. \nA recording IS available for this lecture for LAS Members only\, on request.\n \n  \n\n \n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting (Jeremiah Horrocks Memorial Lecture): Professor Andy Newsam - "Art & Astronomy: Universal Appeal"
DESCRIPTION:The February 2020 (Jeremiah Horrocks Memorial Lecture) monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2020 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, February 21st from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Professor Andy Newsam of Liverpool John Moores University\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Art & Astronomy: Universal Appeal”\n\nFor centuries science and art went hand-in-hand\, but more recently they seem to have diverged into two distinct “cultures”. However\, they still have much to gain from each other and in this talk Professor Andy Newsam will describe some forays by an astronomer into the world of art to try to explore challenging concepts with unsuspecting audiences. From computer music to dance\, theatre to gardening shows\, and exploring science from gravity and the nature of Dark Matter\, to the physics of breakfast\, we will see some ways in which art and science can work together\, and also perhaps ask whether the two cultures are really as different as they might at first seem. \n\n\nSubscriptions for the current session 2019-2020 are now very overdue and should have been paid by October 1st.\nIf your subscription was not paid by the end of January\, your membership rights (including voting) have lapsed.\nIf your subscription is not paid by the end of March\, your membership may end.\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you wish to become a member or update your subscription.\n \nAdult Annual Subscription is £15.00\nJunior Members Subscription (10 to 17yrs) is £5.00 \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark
