SUMMARY:Weekly Public Meeting at the Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill
DESCRIPTION:When and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. We don’t tend to have arranged presentations at these public meetings however there is planetarium software\, astronomical images (many of them taken by our members)\, etc. \nSo good weather or bad\, feel free to pop along!\nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a professional astronomer\, or just interested\, we welcome you.\nPerhaps you’ve recently bought a telescope but don’t know how to set it up or get the best from it – bring it along with you (if it’s portable enough!) and somebody will be happy to help you. If it’s too big to bring along\, write down the manufacturer and model number\, and maybe a couple of photos if possible\, and if it’s a telescope we’re familiar with we may still be able to advise. \nIf you have any questions about our public Weekly Meetings\, please contact the Director of the Observatory. \n \nThe observatory is also available exclusively to LAS Members at other times of the week – please contact the Director of the Observatory for more information. \nLeighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting (William Lassell Memorial Lecture): Ms. Melanie Davies FRAS - "Titan: A candidate for evolution?"
DESCRIPTION:The October 2019 (William Lassell Memorial Lecture) monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2020 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, October 18th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Ms. Melanie Davies from Creative Space – a Community Interest Company delivering astronomy outreach and public engagement to all ages and abilities. From mobile planetarium shows to free astronomy events\, they’ve got space covered in a fun and creative way\, and her lecture is entitled: \n“Titan: A candidate for evolution?”\nSaturn’s moon\, Titan\, is a strange and mysterious world; it may even have the right ingredients for life. \nThe talk gives an overview of this Earth-like world and the space missions that have paid it a visit. This extraordinary moon is discussed in detail in this captivating presentation\, which features scientific findings\, audio and visual recordings from the Huygens Lander\, and ideas about the existence of Titanites. The presentation is full of exceptional images – both from orbit and on the surface – and is delivered in easy-to-understand language\, explaining the more difficult concepts in layman’s terms. \nThe European Space Agency\, along with NASA\, have played an important role in investigative science at Titan. Many discoveries have been made\, but many mysteries remain to be solved. The talk also outlines mission proposals for the future. \n\nSubscriptions for the current session 2019-2020 are now overdue and should have been paid by October 1st.\n Please contact the Treasurer if you wish to become a member or update your subscription.\n \nAdult Annual Subscription is  £15.00\nJunior Members Subscription (10 to 17yrs)  is £5.00 \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

\nIf you have any questions about our public Weekly Meetings\, please contact us via the Forums\, or contact the Director of the Observatory. \n \nThe observatory is also available exclusively to LAS Members at other times of the week – please contact the Director of the Observatory for more information. \nLeighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010
