SUMMARY:Introduction to Radio Astronomy\, Wednesday 1st August\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, the date of this event has changed to the 1st of August – it was previously scheduled for 18th July \nAs part of the informal activities initiative\, Mr. Andy Sierslowski from The Astronomy Centre in Yorkshire will be visiting us to show members how they can do radio astronomy from their own homes.\nAndy has a love of both visual and radio astronomy\, and is a true ‘professional’ amateur\, making his own aerials which can detect objects such as the sun and Jupiter\, as well as meteorites (via reflected radio signals). It’s a fascinating branch of astronomy\, and of course it doesn’t have that requirement of a cloudless sky to be able to enjoy it. \nThere is no need to book ahead for this\, and it will take place in the relaxed atmosphere of Pex Hill. The primary audience for this event is LAS members. \nIf you would like more information\, please use the form below: \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n Your Name *\n \n \n \n :\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Your Email *\n \n \n \n :\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Telephone\n \n \n \n :\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subject *\n \n \n \n :\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Message *\n \n \n \n :\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\nΔ

SUMMARY:Gravitational Waves: turning on the soundtrack to the Universe
DESCRIPTION:(Please note\, this is not an LAS organised event) \nThe last two years have seen our ability to study our Universe change forever. For the first time we have been able to not only see the stars in the heavens\, but to feel the very vibrations of the fabric of space-time produced when stars collide. In February 2016 the scientists of the international LIGO and Virgo collaborations announced the first detection of gravitational waves – tiny gravitational fluctuations sensed using instruments here on the Earth\, but produced around 1.3 billion years ago far out in the cosmos when two dead stars – in this case ‘black-holes’ spiralled in and merged. The existence of such gravitational waves was first predicted by Einstein as part of his\n‘General Theory of Relativity’ in 1916. \nIn the decades between then and now\, searches for such signals have been the focus of scientists around the globe\, including key work here in the UK.\nThis lecture will discuss the nature of gravitational waves\, the astrophysical events that can produce them\, the technology of gravitational wave observatories and the recent results in this new field leading to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017 for the detection of gravitational waves: turning on the soundtrack to the Universe. \nProfessor Sheila Rowan is Director of the Institute for Gravitational Research\, University of Glasgow\, a position she has held since 2009. She received an MBE in 2011.\nSheila’s research is targeted at developing optical materials for use in gravitational wave detectors. Her work formed part of the “Advanced LIGO” detector upgrades\, carried out between 2010 and 2015\, that contributed to one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of this century: the first detection of gravitational waves announced in\nFebruary 2016. This resulted in a share of the 2016 Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for her and the members of her team in\nGlasgow. Professor Rowan was appointed Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland in June 2016. \nBookings for this free event can be made at https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/events/science-and-society/form/

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Friday\, 16th March\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:The March 2018 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2017 – 2018 (136th) session will be held on Friday\, March 16th from 19:00 to 21:30. \n\nOur guest speaker for this Friday’s monthly meeting has changed. My apologies for the short notice however ill health has befallen Dr. Katherine Joy and unfortunately she won’t be able to attend. In her place\, Mr. Russell Parry has generously agreed to fill the spot and will be speaking for us about the Appley Bridge meteorite.\nI know many of you were looking forward to Dr. Joy’s lecture and may be disappointed\, however I hope that you will enjoy Mr. Parry’s lecture. I will endeavour to rebook Dr. Joy for a future date. \n“The Appley Bridge Meteorite”\nOne late Tuesday evening in mid-October 1914\, residents of Appley Bridge – a village to the north-west of Wigan – were surprised to see a streak of light tearing through the sky\, followed by a series of loud explosions. The Great War had recently begun\, and if people thought they were under attack\, it is understandable. This\, however\, was no man-made incendiary device – its origin was much further away than Germany.\nRussell Parry will tell the tale of the Appley Bridge Meteorite for us this coming Friday. \n  \nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Katherine Joy of the University of Manchester\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Space rocks on ice: Hunting for meteorites in Antarctica”\nMeteorites shed light on the origin of the Solar System and on the geological history of different planetary bodies. Antarctica is unique collection ground for meteorites – it very cold so preserves them well\, the black meteorites are easy to spot against the white ice\, and meteorites samples are often concentrated together on the ice along the Transantarctic mountain range. I will outline my experience in travelling to collect meteorites with the US Antarctic Search for Meteorites Programme\, and talk about the scientific reasons we go and collect these stones from space. \nKatherine Joy obtained her PhD in studies of lunar evolution from University College London in 2007\, where she combined data from the European Space Agency’s SMART-1 mission and studies of lunar meteorites. She then held a postdoctoral research position at Birkbeck College where she studied data from the X-ray instrument on the Indian Chandrayaan-1 mission. In 2010 Katherine took up a postdoctoral research post in Houston\, Texas where she was based at the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA Johnson Space Centre as a NLSI postdoctoral research fellow. She studied samples returned by the Apollo 16 mission in order to study the Moon’s impact record. In 2012 Katherine returned to the UK to work at the University of Manchester where she investigates the bombardment history of the Moon and inner Solar System. She has twice joined the US Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) programme\, spending two field season’s on the ice collecting meteorites \n\nSubscriptions for 2016-2017 are now overdue and should have been paid by October 1st.\n Please contact the Treasurer if you wish to become a member or update your subscription.\n \nAdult Annual Subscription is  £15.00\nJunior Members Subscription (10 to 17yrs)  is £5.00 \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Ken

However\, the story of their discovery is one of missed opportunities\, the advent of radio astronomy\, careful observational measurements\, and a fierce fight between two groups of astronomers before the truth was finally accepted. This talk describes the ins and outs of this story\, the personalities involved and gives an insight into how quasars are powered and the fact that supermassive black holes are almost ubiquitous in the Universe. \n\nPlease note\, the lecture which was formerly booked for this date was cancelled due to the unexpected death of Dr. Glyn Marsh. The LAS sends its condolences to Dr. Marsh’s family. \nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Glyn Marsh whose lecture is entitled: \n“Sir Robert Ludwig Mond and the Mond Photographic Equatorial – a local astronomy connection”\nRobert Ludwig Mond was born at “The Hollies”\, now No. 23 Derby Road\, Farnworth on the 9th September 1867 – only a few miles from the LAS observatory at Pex Hill\, Cronton. \nHe was the eldest son of Ludwig and Frida Mond (originally from Cassel\, Germany). Ludwig Mond\, an industrial chemist\, had moved to England in 1862 to license a process he had invented for the recovery of sulphur from wastes produced during the manufacture of alkali. The Widnes area had\, at that time\, the largest concentration of alkali works in the country and waste products were becoming a significant environmental problem. \nLater\, Ludwig Mond\, along with John Brunner would go on to become a major alkali manufacturer at Winnington\, Cheshire\, using a new\, more efficient and benign process and became very wealthy. Brunner\, Mond and Company eventually formed a major part of the giant Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Robert himself also became a distinguished scientist\, a scholar of ancient Egypt and an industrial chemist of some repute. In addition\, he used his family’s wealth and connections for good causes and was very much a philanthropist. \nAstronomy was one area of science that interested him greatly and in conjunction with Dr William J.S.Lockyer\, son of the famous Sir Norman Lockyer\, helped maintain the “Hill Observatory” at Sidmouth\, Devon that had been established by Norman Lockyer in 1912. In 1932\, Robert\, now Sir Robert Mond\, presented a unique astrographic instrument made by Cooke\, Troughton & Simms to the Norman Lockyer Observatory and provided further funding for a professional observer to undertake research. The talk will describe and illustrate the many special features of this telescope and provide examples of its photographic observations from 1932 up until 1997 when film photography gave way to digital imaging. An on-going restoration and historical research project will also provide interesting insights into its heritage and possible future. \n\nSubscriptions for 2016-2017 are now overdue and should have been paid by October 1st.\n Please contact the Treasurer if you wish to become a member or update your subscription.\n \nAdult Annual Subscription is  £15.00\nJunior Members Subscription (10 to 17yrs)  is £5.00 \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Ken
