SUMMARY:Stargazing Evening at Court Hey Park (part of National Astronomy Week 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Come along to our stargazing evening where we’ll have telescopes in which you can view the night sky if clear. There will also be an illustrated talk about the wonders of the solar system at 7.15pm and repeating it at 8pm (lasting about half an hour). All ages are welcome although the talk is aimed at aged 8 upwards. There will also be telescopes to look through\, meteorites\, and some themed Lego. \n\n\n\nEsposito’s cafe will be open late for refreshments. The Friends of Court Hey Park will also be selling some handcrafted items (cash only). \n\n\n\nThere’s no need to book – just come to the courtyard anytime between 7-9pm. We’re anticipating the car park will be busy so please walk or car share if possible. There will be volunteers helping in the car park\, but it’ll be dark so remember to bring a torch. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, and is open to all members of the public and is part of National Astronomy Week 2025.

SUMMARY:Astronomia Shop Day at Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill\, Saturday 22nd November 2014
DESCRIPTION:Adele Horton from Astronomia will be running a portable shop at the observatory on Saturday 22nd November. \nAdele has indicated that if any members would like to see any astronomical equipment\, telescopes\, mounts\, binoculars\, eyepieces\, filters\, and even astronomical books\, she will do her best to bring it up to Liverpool\, with a view in making purchase of some kind. If you would like to take up this offer\, then you can either contact Gerard Giligan or perhaps you would like to contact Adele direct: – adele@astronomia.co.uk\, web site address is http://www.astronomia.co.uk/ \nAs part of the presentation at the QMH on Friday evening\, Adele along with Neil Phillipson hope to demonstrate the basics of telescopes designs\, and then following a tea/coffee break a more advance lecture for the long standing members. \nFor the Saturday\, Adele is unable to stay at the observatory too late as due to other commitments\, so if you wish to attend\, please do try to be there for 3pm. \nFrom the Astronomia website: \nAstronomia is actually rather unique. We’re specialists in optics – and that’s all we do! Our passion is for telescopes and binoculars – of all shapes and sizes – and we take enormous pleasure in helping all kinds of astronomers (especially beginners) to select the right instrument for their needs. \nAt Astronomia we have a rule – if it won’t give you a view that makes you say “Wow!”\, we don’t sell it. With optics\, we don’t compromise. That’s why we’ve identified the very best telescope manufacturers and brought their finest instruments together to form a range that is virtually unparalleled in the UK. And when we say a ‘range’ – we mean the biggest range of telescopes in the South of England – and at Astronomia you can see\, touch\, try and even lift every single one on display! \nSo we’ve got the biggest range. That part was easy. But we haven’t stopped there. Below are some of the really special things we do because\, frankly\, we’re hell-bent on being the very best astronomy shops there are! \n\nFull-Price Trade-ins – bring back any telescope within 12 months of purchase\, and we’ll give you the full price back against an upgraded model! …\n30-Day Money-back Guarantee – If you change your mind\, all you have to do is return the item in saleable condition and we’ll give you a full\, immediate refund. …\nLifetime Care – We’ll collimate your telescope for free\, for life – just bring it back to us and we’ll return it to optimum performance. We have our own workshop at our Dorking store and also work with a number of UK service centres for specialist repairs.\nAlways Observing – If your telescope is with us for any reason\, we’ll try to offer you a loan instrument because we don’t want you to miss any precious clear nights!\nPart of the Community – We don’t hide away in our shop selling telescopes. We’re out there observing\, supporting local societies

SUMMARY:Tanabata Festival (Japanese Star Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Come and join the Conservation Volunteers and Liverpool Astronomical Society to celebrate Tanabata\, or the Star Festival\, it is held on the evening of 7 July throughout Japan. The festival traces its origins to a romantic legend that the Cowherd Star (Altair) and Weaver Star (Vega)\, lovers separated by the Milky Way\, are allowed to meet just once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. \nPeople\, especially children\, write their wishes such as “I want to become good at football” or “I want to become an astronaut” on narrow strips of colored paper called tanzaku and hang them\, along with other paper ornaments\, on bamboo branches placed in the backyards or entrances of their homes. \nThey then pray hard in the hope that their wishes will come true. Towns and cities take on a festive mood during the Tanabata season\, with colorful decorations. Special events and concerts based on the Tanabata legend are held at places like science museums and planetariums. \nAt the Liverpool Garden Festival there will be workshops so people can have a go at Origami\, Calligraphy\, making paper decorations and will be able to attach their tanzaku on the bamboo on site. The Liverpool Astronomical Society will be showing (weather permitting) our nearest star through special telescopes. \nThere will be refreshments on site. The main Tanabata event will be taking place on Saturday 12th July between 10am – 3pm. \nContacts:\nThe Festival Garden\nCaroline Bamford\nFestival Gardens Ranger\n07795 800 970 \nThe Conservation Volunteers\nFestival Gardens\nRiverside Drive\nLiverpool\nL17 7BF \nLiverpool A. SUMMARY:International Sun Day\, 22nd June 2014
DESCRIPTION:For International SUN-day\, June 22nd 2014\, The Liverpool Astronomical Society is hosting a FREE solar observing day at their Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill\, Cronton. \nThe event runs from 1pm to 5pm\, and will give people the opportunity to SAFELY view the sun through specially adapted telescopes\, allowing you to see details you would never normally be able to view. There are also illustrated talks taking place\, along with free tea\, coffee and biscuits. \nPlease remember\, if you do NOT have specialist equipment you must NEVER view the sun through a magnifying device such as binoculars or telescopes – without the correct filters you will almost certainly become permanently blind! (Think of using a magnifying glass focussing the sun to burn something and multiply by many times!) \nOur telescopes have specialised filters which remove the harmful heat and light\, enabling you to see\, without becoming blind\, the detail such as prominences (huge eruptions of plasma\, often many many times the size of the Earth) which are usually invisible to us due to the rest of the sun’s extreme brightness. \n
