SUMMARY:Weekly Public Free Meeting at Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill\, Cronton
DESCRIPTION:When and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except if it falls too close to Christmas)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \n\nPlease note: Voluntary COVID precautions will still be in place including restrictions to the numbers inside the building.\n\n\nCan My Children Attend on a Wednesday Evening?\nWe do not recommend that under-14s attend on Wednesday evenings as it can get extremely busy\, and some may find it a little overwhelming. We do run a monthly Young Astronomers’ club from autumn to spring\, which you can find details of here. \nThat said\, we understand that Wednesday might be the only possible evening that your child can attend\, so you can bring them along with the understanding that we may not be able to give them as much attention as at the dedicated Young Astronomers’ club. \nPlease note: No matter which day/evening your child attends\, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n\nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \n\nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \n\nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. We don’t tend to have arranged presentations at these public meetings however there is planetarium software\, astronomical images (many of them taken by our members)\, etc. \nSo good weather or bad\, feel free to pop along!Whether you’re a complete beginner or a professional astronomer\, or just interested\, we welcome you.Perhaps you’ve recently bought a telescope but don’t know how to set it up or get the best from it – bring it along with you (if it’s portable enough!) and somebody will be happy to help you. If it’s too big to bring along\, write down the manufacturer and model number\, and maybe a couple of photos if possible\, and if it’s a telescope we’re familiar with we may still be able to advise. \n\nIf you have any questions about our public Weekly Meetings\, please contact the Director of the Observatory. \nThe observatory is also available exclusively to LAS Members at other times of the week – please contact the Director of the Observatory for more information. \n\nLeighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010

DESCRIPTION:The April 2022 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2022 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, April 22nd from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Steve Warbis of Macclesfield Astronomical Society. In addition to speaking for them and other organisations\, Steve is an active member of Macclesfield AS as their Field Trip Co-ordinator and former Chairman\, as well as a keen urban astrophotographer. Steve’s lecture is entitled: \nOUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE – How Lucky Do You Feel Today?\n\nAn explanation and illustration of the incredible and fortunate sequence of astronomical processes and events\, many of them just pure chance and random serendipity\, which have led to us being here today. \n\n \n\nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, and will NOT be live-streamed via Zoom and YouTube. \nFor those attending at the QMH:\nPlease try to continue with social distancing and use caution when possible.\nAlso\, use the hand sanitiser that will be available.\nThe wearing of masks will be a personal choice and optional for those that wish to continue wearing them.\nWe will continue to ventilate the room.\nFinally\, please do not attend if you have any COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID that day\, or in the days leading up to the meeting. \nA recording is NOT available for this lecture. \n\nSubscriptions for the current session are suspended due to the COVID-19 situation. We will be reviewing the situation over the coming months and will keep you updated via e-mail. \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost. \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Weekly Public Meeting at the Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus situation\n\nWhen and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. \nIf you have any questions about our public Weekly Meetings\, please contact the Director of the Observatory. \n \nThe observatory is also available exclusively to LAS Members at other times of the week – please contact the Director of the Observatory for more information. \nLeighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Luke Hart - "Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang"
DESCRIPTION:The March 2022 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2022 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, March 18th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Luke Hart\, Software Engineer at TNEI Services Ltd. focusing on power systems analysis\, part of the ESA New Horizons Spectral Distortion Working Group and postdoctoral researcher\, PhD student and MPhys student at the University of Manchester. Luke’s lecture is entitled: \n“Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation: Ripples from the Big Bang”\n\nThere have been lots of amazing astrophysical discoveries in the 20th century including the first pulsars\, the birth of radio astronomy and even the first attempts at using supernovae to explain stellar life cycles. One of the most important however has been the discovery and subsequent understanding of the microwave background radiation (CMB) – the peculiar relic signal that echoes from the Big Bang epoch itself. In this lecture\, I will broach the history of the Big Bang and how it was discovered\, discuss what the fuss is all about: how a tiny ripple in a sea of light can give us the subtlest of clues about our own universe’s understanding. I will try to link in recent research and modern satellites\, theories and other advances in the field of modern cosmology and how they relate to the CMB. To conclude\, I will talk about the most exceptional of advances in theoretical cosmology and how these tiny little flickers in the signal could potentially allow us to look even further back than before. \n\n\n  \nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, but will also be live-streamed via Zoom and YouTube. \nSociety members have been sent a Zoom invite.\nA recording IS publicly available for this lecture »»» at this YouTube link. \n  \n\n \n\nSubscriptions for the current session would normally be due however fees are still being waived for the moment. We will inform you when this changes. \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. (Nb. members of the public do not need to send their apologies 🙂) \nWith best wishes – Mark
