DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus situation \nWhen and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. DESCRIPTION:The December 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, December 10th from 19:00 to 21:00. \nThe tradition is for the December monthly meeting to have speakers from our own Society. As such we will continue with that tradition and we have three very interesting talks from three of our very own well known and respected members. \n\nOur speakers this month and the titles of their talks are as follows: \n\n\n\nName\nTalk Title\n\n\nMr. David Galvin FRAS\nImaging Neptune’s Moon\, Triton\n\n\nMr. Gerard Gilligan\nA Tale of Two Observatories\n\n\nMrs. Hilary Harper\nMoons of the Solar System\n\n\n\n  \n\nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 restrictions\, physical attendance at this lecture at our venue of the Quaker Meeting House is ONLY available to LAS members and pending-members\, by prior booking only. Those eligible have been e-mailed a link for booking of tickets. \nTHOSE WITHOUT PRE-BOOKED TICKETS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED \nWe were able to also live-stream this in-person meeting from the venue – Society members have been sent Zoom & YouTube links. \nA recording IS available for this lecture\, to LAS members only\, on request.\nIf you still have the invite e-mail (sent 10th December 2021 @ 08:14)\, you can also use the YouTube link from that. \n  \n\n\nSubscriptions for the current session would normally be due however fees are still being waived for the moment. DESCRIPTION:The November 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2021 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, November 19th from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Dr. Steve Barrett\, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Fiat Lux III”\n\n‘Fiat Lux’ (Nov 2019) was a talk/demo on the nature of light. ‘Fiat Lux II’ (Nov 2020) looked at how the nature of light influences the design and construction of optical telescopes.\nThe final talk in this trilogy describes a new telescope that will survey many billions of galaxies\, stars and planets and will address the most profound questions concerning our solar system\, our Milky Way galaxy\, and enigmatic dark matter and dark energy. \n\n\n  \nPlease note\, due to COVID-19 restrictions\, physical attendance at this lecture at our venue of the Quaker Meeting House is ONLY available to LAS members and pending-members\, by prior booking only. DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus situation \nWhen and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. DESCRIPTION:The September 2021 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society will be held on Friday\, September 17th from 19:00 to 21:00. \nNormally this meeting would have been the Presidential Address we haven’t yet been able to have the AGM\, we’ve opted to do this meeting more like a ‘normal’ one\, albeit online. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Mr. Sam Walton\, of the Space Plasma Physics Group\, in the Department of Space & Climate Physics\, in the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Space Weather“\n\nThe Sun is an essential ingredient for life on Earth\, providing light\, energy and warmth\, however it is also a huge danger to us. The Sun continuously ejects millions of tonnes of highly energetic\, electrically charged particles into space\, known as the ’solar wind’. \nWhen the solar wind reaches Earth\, it interacts with our planet’s geomagnetic field in extremely complex ways\, posing a danger to technological infrastructure such as satellites\, power grids and communications. We call this phenomenon ’Space Weather’. \nThis talk will guide you through the origins and journey of the Solar Wind from the Sun to the Earth\, describing some of these complex interactions and why they are so threatening to our existing infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus situation \nWhen and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. We don’t tend to have arranged presentations at these public meetings however there is planetarium software\, astronomical images (many of them taken by our members)\, etc. \nSo good weather or bad\, feel free to pop along!Whether you’re a complete beginner or a professional astronomer\, or just interested\, we welcome you.Perhaps you’ve recently bought a telescope but don’t know how to set it up or get the best from it – bring it along with you (if it’s portable enough!) and somebody will be happy to help you.
