Her research explores the interactions between plasma and magnetic fields\, in the atmospheres of the Sun and stars as well as fusion devices. She is particularly interested in explaining how solar flares work and how particles are accelerated in the solar atmosphere. She was awarded the Chapman medal by the Royal Astronomical Society in 2016 \n\n\n\nThe title of her talk is: \n\n\n\n\nThe weather in space – how do solar flares affect the Earth? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQ-Park Car Parking Discount\n\n\n\nFor those of you travelling into the city centre by car\, don’t forget that you can get 20% off parking at Q-Park Hanover Street by using the promo-code QUAKERSLV when pre-booking through the website Q-Park \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLivestream & Recording Information\n\n\n\nThis meeting will be held at our normal venue of the Quaker Meeting House\, and may be live-streamed via YouTube\, if I get the equipment set up in time 😊 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA recording may be available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubscription Info \n\n\n\nIf you have not yet become a Member of the Society and wish to join\, please see our Membership of the Liverpool Astronomical Society page before sending any payment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Membership Fees are correct as of October 2025 \n\n\n\nMembership TypePriceAdults (18 & above) Annual Subscription£25.00Juniors (14-17 inclusive) Annual Subscription£5.00\n\n\n\nPlease note:Subscriptions are due from 1st October each year and must be paid by January 31st or your membership may be suspended. If not paid by 31st March your membership will cease. \n\n\n\nPaying your Subscription Electronically (e.g. via e-banking)\n\n\n\nYou can now pay for your subscription via Internet banking. \n\n\n\nName:Liverpool Astronomical SocietySort Code:60-19-24Account No.:28521250Payment Ref.:Use your full name (or as much of it as possible\, remove spaces if needed) as the reference\, so that our Treasurer can connect your payment to the correct account in the books.\n\n\n\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you require more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information about membership can be found here. \n\n\n\nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \n\n\n\nPlease note – Doors will only open after 18:30 and not before. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \n\n\n\nWith best wishes – Mark

SUMMARY:Solar Astronomy Day at Court Hey\, Wednesday\, 23rd July\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Two images of the solar disc\, side-by-side. The first shows the sun in hydrogen-alpha light\, and the second shows the sun in ordinary visible white light. The hydrogen-alpha image makes it possible to see details like prominences\, flares and other structures present in the solar chromosphere\, while the white-light image shows details in the solar photosphere\, such as sunspots.\nCome along to our Solar Day where we’ll have specially adapted telescopes in which you can safely view the sun.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Dr. Graham Beamson\, FRSC - "Backyard Spectroscopy"
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free)\, but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings. \nThe March 2025 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2024-2025 session will be held on Friday\, March 21st from 19:00 to 21:00. \nAbout This Meeting\nOur guest speaker for March 2025 is Dr. Graham Beamson\, FRSC. \nGraham did his first degree in chemistry at the University of Oxford and stayed on to do a DPhil in ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. He then worked at the University of Durham in infrared and Raman and in x-ray absorption spectroscopy\, and at ICI and Daresbury Laboratory in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. He has over 100 publications to his name\, and is now retired and lives in Cheshire. As a retirement project he did an Open University degree in geology and astronomy. He has a rolling roof observatory with several telescopes and spectrographs. \nThe title of Graham’s talk will be: \n\nBackyard Spectroscopy \n\n“It is over 200 years since Fraunhofer developed his spectroscope\, and since then spectroscopy has grown to be of fundamental importance in astronomy. This talk will describe some of my own activities in amateur astronomical spectroscopy\, in particular using a Sol’Ex – Star’Ex spectrograph. In Sol’Ex configuration this functions as a spectroheliograph\, recording images of the Sun at a defined wavelength. In Star’Ex mode it functions as a high resolution spectrograph for night-time observations. Examples will be shown of solar images and spectra of stars.” \n\nQ-Park Car Parking Discount\nFor those of you travelling into the city centre by car\, don’t forget that you can get 20% off parking at Q-Park Hanover Street by using the promo-code QUAKERSLV when pre-booking through the website Q-Park
