SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Weekly Public Meeting at the Leighton Observatory\, Pex Hill - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus situation \nWhen and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g. 7pm BST in summer\, 7pm UTC in winter) in the Liverpool Astronomical Society’s Leighton Observatory. \nChildren who wish to visit must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nRegular Attendance\nWhile we do welcome members of the public\, we do ask you to consider that\, since everything is paid for from our Membership subscriptions\, if you find yourself attending a Weekly meeting more than 3 times\, or a Monthly meeting more than twice\, you might consider joining the LAS (the cost is minimal and there are a lot of benefits). \nOutdoors\nIf the weather is suitable\, LAS Members present will often have their telescopes and binoculars and members of the public will be able to view astronomical objects such as stars\, the Moon\, Jupiter\, the rings of Saturn\, etc. Don’t forget that the objects which are visible in the sky change throughout the year\, so you may not get a chance to see the particular object you were hoping for\, however\, assuming clear skies\, there is always something interesting to have a look at\, and maybe even a comet if we’re lucky! \nIndoors\nInside the building\, in good weather and bad\, there will be conversations and discussions taking place. We don’t tend to have arranged presentations at these public meetings however there is planetarium software\, astronomical images (many of them taken by our members)\, etc. \nSo good weather or bad\, feel free to pop along!\nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a professional astronomer\, or just interested\, we welcome you.\nPerhaps you’ve recently bought a telescope but don’t know how to set it up or get the best from it – bring it along with you (if it’s portable enough!) and somebody will be happy to help you. If it’s too big to bring along\, write down the manufacturer and model number\, and maybe a couple of photos if possible\, and if it’s a telescope we’re familiar with we may still be able to advise. \nIf you have any questions about our public Weekly Meetings\, please contact the Director of the Observatory. \n \nThe observatory is also available exclusively to LAS Members at other times of the week – please contact the Director of the Observatory for more information. \nLeighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010

\n Leighton Observatory in snow\, January 9th 2010

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting (Jeremiah Horrocks Memorial Lecture): Professor Andy Newsam - "Art & Astronomy: Universal Appeal"
DESCRIPTION:The February 2020 (Jeremiah Horrocks Memorial Lecture) monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2020 (138th) session will be held on Friday\, February 21st from 19:00 to 21:00. \n\nOur guest speaker this month is Professor Andy Newsam of Liverpool John Moores University\, whose lecture is entitled: \n“Art & Astronomy: Universal Appeal”\n\nFor centuries science and art went hand-in-hand\, but more recently they seem to have diverged into two distinct “cultures”. However\, they still have much to gain from each other and in this talk Professor Andy Newsam will describe some forays by an astronomer into the world of art to try to explore challenging concepts with unsuspecting audiences. From computer music to dance\, theatre to gardening shows\, and exploring science from gravity and the nature of Dark Matter\, to the physics of breakfast\, we will see some ways in which art and science can work together\, and also perhaps ask whether the two cultures are really as different as they might at first seem. \n\n\nSubscriptions for the current session 2019-2020 are now very overdue and should have been paid by October 1st.\nIf your subscription was not paid by the end of January\, your membership rights (including voting) have lapsed.\nIf your subscription is not paid by the end of March\, your membership may end.\nPlease contact the Treasurer if you wish to become a member or update your subscription.\n \nAdult Annual Subscription is £15.00\nJunior Members Subscription (10 to 17yrs) is £5.00 \nThe LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost \n\nFree tea/coffee with light refreshments break will form part of the evening at about 8pm. \nPlease note – Doors will only open after 6.30pm and not before. \n\nI do hope you can join me and your fellow members\, but if you are unable to attend\, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form. \nWith best wishes – Mark

DESCRIPTION:When and Where?\nWeekly public meetings are held every Wednesday evening (except at Christmas week)\, between 19:00 (7 PM) and 21:00 (9 PM) local time (e.g.
