If you can see this message then you are using a browser (probably Internet Explorer) which does not support the international web standards used by the LAS website and many others.

.

Please consider using an alternative browser - especially if you are on Windows XP which only supports the outdated Internet Explorer 8 browser - such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome which do have support for these web standards. As well as not supporting modern features and web standards, old versions of browsers - especially Internet Explorer - can expose your computer to security risks. The Browse Happy website has a list of the latest versions of all major browsers, including Internet Explorer (but remember Windows XP only supports up to IE8!)

If updating/changing your browser is not possible, do not panic - all of the LAS website is still available to you and we are working to make the layout compatible with outdated browsers.

In the meantime, you will have to scroll down a way to see the page you wish to view. You can also skip past the moon phase info, etc. and click here after you've loaded a page to jump to the content.

Monthly Meeting: Dr. Graham Beamson, FRSC – “Backyard Spectroscopy”

Friday, 21st March @ 19:00 21:00 GMT

Free

Members of the public are welcome to attend (for free), but please consider joining our Society if you attend more than two monthly meetings.

The March 2025 monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2024-2025 session will be held on Friday, March 21st from 19:00 to 21:00.

About This Meeting

Our guest speaker for March 2025 is Dr. Graham Beamson, FRSC.

Graham did his first degree in chemistry at the University of Oxford and stayed on to do a DPhil in ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. He then worked at the University of Durham in infrared and Raman and in x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and at ICI and Daresbury Laboratory in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. He has over 100 publications to his name, and is now retired and lives in Cheshire. As a retirement project he did an Open University degree in geology and astronomy. He has a rolling roof observatory with several telescopes and spectrographs.

The title of Graham’s talk will be:

Backyard Spectroscopy

“It is over 200 years since Fraunhofer developed his spectroscope, and since then spectroscopy has grown to be of fundamental importance in astronomy. This talk will describe some of my own activities in amateur astronomical spectroscopy, in particular using a Sol’Ex – Star’Ex spectrograph. In Sol’Ex configuration this functions as a spectroheliograph, recording images of the Sun at a defined wavelength. In Star’Ex mode it functions as a high resolution spectrograph for night-time observations. Examples will be shown of solar images and spectra of stars.”
