Saturn Observations by John Knott, September 1991 and September 1997

Saturn, drawn by John Knott in September 1991

Saturn, drawn by John Knott in September 1991.
Note Shadow of disc on the ring system. Crepe Ring was easily seen. Ring A was a darker colour than ring B. Some nice colouring was seen in the equatoral region.
Observation with 216mm Newtonian at X216 Magnification.

Saturn, drawn by John Knott in September 1997. Note shadow of rings on the disc South and North polar hoods are very dusky, with a hint of a very pale North temperate Belt. Both rings A & B similar in colour. Observation with 216mm Newtonian at 216 Magnification.

THE PLANETS DURING NOVEMBER

MERCURY

Is at its greatest Eastern elongation on the 28th, but is poorly placed for observations from Liverpool.

VENUS

The evening star can be found low down in the South-Western sky about one hour after Sunset.

MARS

Can be found within the stars of Sagittarius Close-by Venus on the night of 3rd/4th November.

JUPITER

Can be found low down in the South Western sky. But on the 11th is 4° South of Moon.

SATURN

At 01hrs:26mins GMT on the 12th the ringed planet undergoes a lunar occultation. A very rare event and well worth a look, with both planet and Moon high above the horizon.

URANUS

Is poorly placed for observations.

NEPTUNE

Is also not well placed for observations.

PLUTO

Not well placed for observations during November.

Mars: April 20th 1997. X360 Disc 12.6″ w1=331.9

Seeing for the 3rd March drawing was in the main poor compared with the observation of April 12th. Very similar w1 longitude, the other three drawings were made under good seeing, and all drawings made using 216mm Newtonian with red and blue filters.

March 3rd Observation though made in poor seeing shows a discrete white patch over the great martian Volcano Olympus Mons on the morning limb. Drawing of 21st March gives a fine view of Syrtis Major, while that of 21st April shows Mare Acidalium on the Northern limb.

The drawing of April 20th shows the Syrtis Major with Sinus sabaeus and Sinus Meridiani. Note the bright feature South of the Syrtis Major, Hellas. I can not remember it being so Bright. – J.K.
