If you can see this message then you are using a browser (probably Internet Explorer) which does not support the international web standards used by the LAS website and many others.
Click here for an example of how the site should look
.

Please consider using an alternative browser - especially if you are on Windows XP which only supports the outdated Internet Explorer 8 browser - such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome which do have support for these web standards. As well as not supporting modern features and web standards, old versions of browsers - especially Internet Explorer - can expose your computer to security risks. The Browse Happy website has a list of the latest versions of all major browsers, including Internet Explorer (but remember Windows XP only supports up to IE8!)

If updating/changing your browser is not possible, do not panic - all of the LAS website is still available to you and we are working to make the layout compatible with outdated browsers.

In the meantime, you will have to scroll down a way to see the page you wish to view. You can also skip past the moon phase info, etc. and click here after you've loaded a page to jump to the content.

Monthly Meeting: Mr. Steve Tonkin – “Two Eyes Are Better Than One”

Friday, 23rd October 2020 @ 19:00 - 21:00 BST

The October 2020 (William Lassell Memorial Lecture) monthly meeting of Liverpool Astronomical Society for the 2019 – 2020 (138th) session will be held on Friday, October 23rd (fourth Friday of the month) from 19:00 to 21:00.

Our guest speaker this month is Mr. Steve Tonkin FRAS, author of the popular Binocular Astronomy Book and The Binocular Sky website & newsletter with his talk on practical binocular astronomy, entitled:

“Two Eyes Are Better Than One”

In his talk, Steve details just what can be achieved with a nice pair of binoculars and why they can be better than a telescope for some applications.

We are using Microsoft Teams for this meeting, however you do not need to have the Teams app to take part, it will work in a browser much like a Zoom meeting would – click the “Watch on the web instead” button.
If using a browser, we’ve found that best results are obtained with Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

You do not need to create a Microsoft account to join the meeting – if you are prompted to log in, simply click on the “Join anonymously” link just below the Sign in button.

We are still configuring the LAS’ own Teams system, but LAS member Mr. Les Girvan has very kindly offered to take care of the technical side of the meeting and host it with his own Teams account – if you do sign in to the meeting with a Microsoft account, you may be notified that it is being hosted by “Data-Stream” – this is safe.

For the Q&A, there is a dedicated Q&A feature built-in to Teams so you will be able to ask questions for the speaker in there.

A recording of the talk will be available to LAS members at a later date.

The structure of the meeting is expected to be as follows:

18:45 – Room opens
19:00 – Society business
19:15 – Lecture starts
20:00 – 2015 – Tea Break
20:15 – 21:00 – Lecture and Q&A

Please note, due to COVID-19 this meeting is ONLINE-ONLY.
Society members have been sent a link to MS Teams.

A recording IS available for this lecture for LAS Members only, on request.

The LAS e-newsletter is now included in your normal subscription cost

I do hope you can join me and your fellow members, but if you are unable to attend, please indicate your apologies to me by filling out this form.

With best wishes – Mark
